The second book in the Starlight Chronicles, Lark Singer, drops us right back into the chaos that is Lark’s life. She and her band are still practicing every day for their upcoming competition, she still doesn’t get along with her mom, and things are still wobbly with Bean. But now, her nemesis at school announces he is in one of the competing bands, she is becoming friends with the head cheerleader at school, and she finds mysterious pictures in her mom’s closet. Her emotions are all over the place and she is still trying to just hang on till the competition. Again, I feel like the book is just far too short.

The three books in the series could quite honestly be put into one longer book, make it one continuous story. In saying that, I still enjoyed reading the book.

Lisa Orchard was again able to tap into the emotions of a teenage girl just trying to get through her crazy life in a small town high school. You can feel the radically changing emotions going through Lark, the good and the bad. The happiness she feels in her budding relationship with Bean, and the terrifying reality that it could be ripped away if her suspicions are true about his drug problems. I love those expressive emotions, it makes you want to keep reading, hoping along with Lark that there is no truth in the suspicions.

Every female reader was once a teenager themselves (or still is) and can connect with Lark. We have all had the fallings-out with our mothers, single or not, and have also experienced the revelation that she is not responsible for all the bad things happening in their lives; that she is human, just like us. We have all experienced the new emotions of teenage love and wonder. I love watching Lark grow in this second story. She opens up to her mom, makes new friends she never once considered having, loves for the first time, and also comes to the realization that nothing is perfect. If only we had all had those revelations at the young age of seventeen.

Starlight, the third book in the Starlight Chronicles is available now and I am looking forward to reading the conclusion to this emotional teenage journey.

One Last Thought: Grammatically, this book had some blinding errors with punctuation. It doesn’t take away too much from the actual story, but it could have used a bit more editing.

Favorite Thing About This Book: I love the emotions and the growth of Lark.

First Sentence: The guys are impatiently waiting for me.

Favorite Character: Lark

Least Favorite Character: guy in black

Lark Singer is seventeen years old and already on the way to a brilliant music career. As she and her band, Starlight, gear-up for an upcoming, life-changing band competition, though, life seems to be throwing her a few curve balls.

The mysteries of her past seem to be unraveling, and she’s no longer certain she wants to know those answers, or how knowing about her past will affect her difficult relationship with her mother. And when her best friend, Bean, changes things between them, all her plans for a musical future are placed in jeopardy. How can she balance her unraveling personal life to keep her musical goals on track?
