Author Interview & Giveaway: Imogen Rose

We are excited to welcome author, Imogen Rose, to the nest today. Imogen is the author of Initiation, the first book in the Bonfire Academy series, as well as the Bonfire Chronicles and the Portal Series. She was kind enough to join us in the nest today for an interview and she has a great giveaway opportunity for our readers. Giveaway details can be found at the end of this post.

Andrea @ Reading Lark: How long have you been writing?

Imogen: I started writing in 2009, but I’ve been telling stories for years.

Andrea @ Reading Lark: Can you describe Initiation in five words?

Imogen: Paranormal hijinks in Gossip Girl world. Six words... :D

Andrea @ Reading Lark: Where did you get the idea for this story?

Imogen: This story was born from my book Faustine, which I wrote last year. It came from reader questions asking about Faustine and Ryker’s suddenly close relationship and how that had come about.

Andrea @ Reading Lark: Which supernatural being is your favorite?

Imogen: I love writing about all kinds of supernatural beings, apart from zombies. I can’t seem to connect with them because of their obvious lack of emotions. In my head, I can attribute human-type emotions to most other kinds of supernaturals, making them more relatable.

Andrea @ Reading Lark: Which character is your favorite to write?

Imogen: I don’t have a favorite. I feel very close to all my main characters. At the moment, I’m writing through Cordelia, so I’m very bound to her.

Andrea @ Reading Lark: What was the road to publication like for you?

Imogen: I can’t type properly, so I tap away with my two index fingers. I usually do the first draft in about a month, by just sitting down and letting my imagination flow. I don’t plan or outline. Once I’m done with the first draft, I go through it a couple of times and flesh out/cut bits as needed. Then I send it off to my wonderful story/content editor, Sue Bernstein. Once I get it back and go through her edits, the manuscript goes off to Lynn O’Dell and her team at Red Adept Publishing. It goes through a thorough editing process, which includes copyediting and proofing. I then send it off to my beta readers, usually five of them. My wonderful regulars include Al Kunz, Allirea Brumley, Vickie Boehnlein, and Lala Price. Once I’ve incorporated their edits, a final two proofreads are done by the Red Adept team.

Andrea @ Reading Lark: Does music inspire you when you're writing? If so, can you share a few songs that you used while writing Initiation?

Imogen: I don’t listen to music while I’m writing, but I enjoy listening to all kinds of music from opera to jazz and rock.

Andrea @ Reading Lark: Why did you choose to write paranormal YA?

Imogen: It wasn't a conscious choice. I just happened to write my first book, Portal, about a teen girl. It sort of went from there. I really enjoy going back to my time as a teen and exploring my emotions from that time.

Andrea @ Reading Lark: What's next for you writing wise?

Imogen: I am writing the sequel to Initiation at the moment, Integration. After that, I’ll start on the fifth book of the Portal Chronicles, Fusion.

Andrea @ Reading Lark: What is your favorite bird?

Imogen: The eagle, though I do like the paranormal Mason-type the best. :D
